Allow me to introduce myself… My name is Matthew Dew, a farmers son from Cambridgeshire. I Have spent the last 25 years in the building trade and although good at my job it left me with no satisfaction, over the last few years I have increasingly been taking on commissions to build everything from oak framed outside classrooms for schools to cabinets for military cap badge collections, this work re-sparked my interest and I enjoyed unleashing my creativity. Now I have come to a stage where I want to create from my imagination not just create other peoples ideas! Mid life crisis my friends tell me, and maybe I should have gone out and bought a little red sports car but instead I decided it was time to do something I was enjoying… something fulfilling… Matinhol Bespoke was born!
“A BROKEN CRAYON STILL WORKS”
I’ve always loved quotations , the above has stuck with me for many years…it sums up the ethos behind Matinhol Bespoke… I travel to reclaim yards and pick through old barns, I search out anything of Interest that has usually come to the end of its life for which it was created, and look for a new practical way to bring it back to life! I love a story… and every item I make I try and find out where it came from… who used it… who used it… what was its story! I love the fact that a wood lathe leg, forged in 1905, spent its working life taking the knocks of a factory floor for 100 years and is now re- appreciated as a loved piece of useful furniture!
“I BEGIN WITH AN IDEA AND THEN IT BECOMES SOMETHING ELSE”
At Matinhol Bespoke every item is individual… unique… a one off. Although decorative, a practical use is a must in our designs and space saving is often a priority. I love the Patina that age brings to an item an I try to preserve this as much as possible… it tells the history of the item… it adds to its story… That broken crayon still works!
Almost all of the wood used is oak as I love it’s grain, it’s colour and it’s Durability. As well as saving the items I use, the wood is also reclaimed or saved in some form… old floor boards to broken fence posts… I don’t like to see them wasted and with a little effort they look as good as new but with a depth of colour that only comes with age!
I’m a little quirky… so I’m told… and I like to bring this to my work!
Although I do not often do commissions, I am always open to hearing from you if you like my style of work and require a piece of a particular size or use.
I Hope you enjoy the website… I endeavour to keep new items arriving weekly and to keep design fresh and quirky at times!
This is a new Journey for me… an exciting one… and if you read this then your joining me at the start and I thank you for looking… Please feel free to subscribe to Matinhol Bespoke newsletter and follow my journey with me as I develop my designs and keep the stories going!
